Opening night: Re-imagining Africa through the arts

Birmingham based Ifa-Yoruba Contemporary Arts Trust (IYCAT), run by double Grammy award-winning Musician and Director, Lekan Babalola, launches the first of many arts experiences for the African diaspora and beyond.

The African Weekender which runs from Friday 24th through to Sunday 26th November across various locations across the city will include Gambian/West African storytelling, Angola rooted Kizomba dance, Shakespearean drama with a Yoruba twist, contemporary music fusion, percussion performance and much much more.

With the focus on ‘Re-imagining Africa through the Arts’, the weekender will showcase a plethora of exceptional talent over the course of 3 days.

8pm: Osun’s Story and Other Tales – with Pyn Stockman, including live music from Kate Luxmoore and Lekan Babalola and artwork by Adebayo Bolaji.

Acclaimed Storyteller Pyn Stockman, musicians Lekan Babalola, Kate Luxmoore and artist Adebayo Bolaji come together to recreate the ancient tales of Osun and other traditional stories with a contemporary twist. Be immersed in the mystical world of old told through modern tongues.

9pm: Steve Ajao Blues Giants

With talent hailing from Birmingham and sounds glazed in the southern psalms of Mississippi, Guitarist Steve Ajao and the Blue Giants will grace the stage with some of their most iconic hits, seasoning the African Weekender with the seductive sound of the Blues.

10pm: Lekan Babalola Sacred Funk 4tet

This is an exclusive chance to experience the transcendent ambience of twice Grammy-award winner Lekan Babalola and the Sacred Funk 4tet. Entwining jazz with his native Yoruba tongue, it is the perfect combination of historic and contemporary music from the diaspora of Africa.
